THREE DAYS
GOTAWAY

In the 2001 archery season we had two Georgia hunters that hunted the first week in November. Although neither went home with a deer, both seen numerous bucks and vowed that if they were physically and financially able, would come back and hunt every year. David Lock from Lagrange, GA had numerous opportunities to harvest several Pope & Young bucks but passed in hopes of harvesting one of the huge Kansas bucks that he seen nearly every day of the hunt. In the 2002 season, David passed on a couple of 160+ bucks and had a 25 yard shot at a buck of a lifetime. The deer he missed was a deer we name Z-71. This deer was later harvested by one of our two rifle hunters (see picture of huge 3x3 in the 2002 rifle hunt section, hunter Brian King). Although it was very disappointing to miss, David said it was an awesome experience to just have the opportunity.

David's hunting partner Jack Martin Jr. from Concord, GA had the same kind of luck, but his was just reverse from David's. On the 2001 hunt, after passing on numerous 140-150 class bucks, Jack had a chance at a huge Kansas buck. His shot was a little back and his arrow did not pass through. There was very little blood and we looked fro 2 days after the hit with no luck. Galen and I spent numerous hours that winter looking for that deer with no luck. We told Jack to never give up hope because we know all the adjoining landowners and we informed everyone in the area of the deer and Jack's description of his trophy. In January of 2003 a good friend of ours was quail hunting with some college buddies and came across a deer carcass directly 1 1/4 mile south of where Jack wounded the deer. It was around 1/4 of a mile south of where we stopped our search. After hearing Jack's description of the deer several times, we knew if it was his deer we just needed to take a look. When we saw the antlers for the first time it fit Jack's description. We took some digital pictures of the head and antlers and emailed them to an anxiously awaiting Jack Martin. Jack told us when we informed him about the deer that he would be able to identify the deer. He also said if it wasn't his deer, he didn't want it. We were on the phone with him and waiting for him to pull up the picture off of his email. It was evident when he saw the pictures for the first time, that this was the deer that had haunted him in his nightmares for two years. And what an awesome deer it is!!!
